           The Story of Lee Paxton

 

 

Hello, I'm Lee Paxton.

I'm from Southeastern Ohio originally. I went to High School in Marietta, Ohio, class of 1996. My mom played guitar and sang folk songs to my sister and I when we were little, and my dad had a bunch of cool old rock n' roll records by the Doors, the Cream, Santana, and many others. My sister Jeanna and I began writing songs early on, and I first started recording and writing my own songs more seriously around 1993 (though I had been recording some songs since about 1989). I played piano originally. Back then, they were mostly just little funny songs, comedy meant to tick certain people off (and, man, they usually did!)

Soon, my sister Jeanna started playing guitar and writing her own songs, and then I got a drum set and began playing drums too. We played at the local coffee shops in Marietta, and everyone really seemed to like it. A friend named Sam Crihfield had a 4-track recorder and let us borrow it once, and that's when I became even more interested in recording my own songs. I started playing more guitar and experimenting with many different types and styles of music. I started SassJoy Records in 1994.

I got my own 4-track in 1996, and began recording even more and better music. I still use the same 4-track to this day, but now I also transfer the music to disc using a CD recorder with analogue input jacks. Jeanna and I jammed out with several different musicians over the years, and I learned some things on guitar from a friend named Jesse Ray. Later on, Jeanna and I wanted to put a really cool band together, and I met a bass player named Scott Floodstrom in 1996. Scott is still one of my best friends. Jeanna and I each wrote all our own songs and sang and both of us played guitars, and Scott played bass.

I recorded the drum tracks too, but for live performances we got a very talented local drummer named Eric Gray. Our band was called Ma Huang, after the chinese herb ephedrine, which was legal back then, but now it's a little more controversial, and its safety is considered questionable by some medical experts. I recorded the first Ma Huang album in 1996, and many other recordings. In 1997 I recorded my solo album "SoLow". This album contains some of my best songs, mostly because I was then inspired (as I still am) by my wife Suzanne (whom I've been with since 1996). In 1998, I recorded Ma Huang's finest album "When the Whole World Seems Bad". In 1999 I released a solo album entitled "Funky Grooves in the Nude". It was a hilarious album, although it really marked the end of an era. The 1990s were over, and Suzanne and I and Scott and Jeanna all moved from Marietta Ohio to Athens Ohio. We all had many things to do, so our music took a back seat for a few years.

I still recorded periodically, but not as much. I did some recordings in 2000 and 2001, and then really tried to come up with the best material that I had ever done up to that point. I was working on my "masterpiece" concept album entitled "John's House", which was meant to tell the story of my eccentric friend John Kirkbride's life and times. I only finished half the album, so it remains an unfinished work. Suzanne and I moved to Maryland around D.C. for awhile on top of that. I seemed to have been under a lot of stress at that time, and I just could not finish the rest of that album. Suzanne and I now live north of Pittsburgh, PA, and I decided to pick up my old wooden guitar in early 2004 and began writing some songs and playing my own music again, and I feel better than ever! I'm BACK and even FuNkier, Baby, and this time I'm ALL STRIPPED DOWN!

I also got my Work Clothes on, in my October 2004 release, and I'm still standing up for the rights of people everywhere, and speaking my mind - and walkin' on down that line!

The "Lee Pax Americana Trilogy" was completed in July 2005 with the album entitled Any Road, which was funky and hilarious too.

In early 2006, I made some lo-fi recordings of myself playing live and unedited.  Those rough live recordings became the American Revolutionary album.

My most recent album, Skanky Life (June 2006), is perhaps my most lyrically interesting and explorative collection of songs so far.  Also, be sure to look for some funky new stuff on the way.  Enjoy, and keep on groovin' !
